The office lights hummed. Elias realized alts.txt wasn't a log of what happened; it was a record of the paths not taken—the "alternates" of reality. And for the first time in the file's history, the current entry was waiting for him to decide which reality became the text and which became the "alt."
Elias froze. His own name was in a file dated years before he even applied. He scrolled to the bottom. The last entry was dated today.
But for Elias, a junior sysadmin with a habit of poking around legacy directories, the contents were anything but standard. When he opened it at 2:00 AM, the screen didn’t show IP addresses. It showed a list of dates and descriptions: alts.txt
