Instead of the typical Konso (soul burial) process, the Gates of Hell appear to claim Shrieker. This introduces the series' concept that Zanpakutō only purify sins committed as a Hollow; sins committed as a human remain with the soul, leading to eternal damnation.

Ichigo eventually manages to slash Shrieker. However, because Shrieker committed heinous murders as a human, he cannot be purified and sent to the Soul Society like normal Hollows. Key Thematic Elements
