Layfon’s reluctance stems from his desire to live a normal life and distance himself from the violence of his past. However, as he walks through the empty, tension-filled streets, he realizes that his inaction will directly lead to the deaths of his friends. This epiphany forces a shift in his resolve; he chooses to fight not out of duty to the city, but out of a personal desire to protect those he cares about. The Battle for Zuellni
Episode 9 effectively balances the series' recurring themes:
The battle unfolds poorly for the student defenders. The 9th Platoon’s standard DITE weapons prove ineffective, barely scratching the monsters’ armor. As night falls and the situation becomes increasingly desperate, the 9th Platoon members abandon Nina and Sharnid, leaving them alone against an onslaught of bugs.
The episode begins with a moment of rare normalcy for the 17th Platoon. While Nina and Harley observe inter-platoon matches, Layfon takes a break to have lunch with Mayshen. However, this peace is short-lived. The mobile city of Zuellni falls into a massive ditch, an event that inadvertently disturbs a nest of (Contaminoids).
As the city mobilizes, Nina Antalk is assigned to lead the 9th Platoon in defending the northwest section. Layfon, aware of the monsters' true lethality from his past as a successor in Grendan, recognizes that Nina and her team are vastly outmatched. He urges her to evacuate, but Nina, driven by her rigid sense of duty and pride as a leader, refuses and questions why he is unwilling to fight alongside them.
Faced with an imminent invasion, Student Council President Kalian Loss orders all Military Arts students to defend the city. This order highlights a grim reality of their world: most of these students have never faced actual Filth Monsters and are drastically under-prepared for a life-or-death struggle.
