The story follows , a 30-year-old man from the province with a rigid and sheltered upbringing. His uncle sends him to Lisbon to be initiated into "masculine life" under the care of a friend named D. Jorge. In the city, Antunes meets Judite , a prostitute who uses "Judite" as her "nome de guerra" (pseudonym or professional name). The novel details Antunes' internal struggle between his conservative past and the newfound freedom and self-discovery he experiences through his relationship with Judite.
