The primary plot begins when Rose’s cousin, (played by Casey Sander), arrives from Sweden. Sven is on his way to St. Olaf for an arranged marriage to a woman named Olga. Despite his nickname, Sven is a tall, handsome, but incredibly naive and literary man.

Meanwhile, is frustrated with her boyfriend, Floyd McCallum, who repeatedly cancels their dates. To make Floyd jealous, Blanche decides to use the visiting Sven as a "pawn," taking him out on the town and feigning a passionate romance in front of Floyd. Her plan works too well: Sven, who has never experienced such attention, falls deeply in love with Blanche, even though he is still technically engaged to Olga.
