When he launched the executable, there was no title screen, no "Options" or "Credits." Just a black screen that bled into a first-person view of a damp, limestone tunnel. The graphics were hyper-realistic for an old game, the stone walls slick with a wet, organic sheen.

On the screen, thousands of tiny, translucent spiders began to pour from the crevices of the digital cave. They didn't stay on the screen. They began to crawl under the glass of his monitor, like pixels coming to life. Then, he felt the first tickle on his real-world ankle.
