The story begins in the workshop of , a lonely woodcarver. He creates a puppet from pine wood and, seeing a shooting star, wishes for the puppet to become a real boy. The Blue Fairy visits the workshop and brings the puppet, named Pinocchio, to life. She tells him that if he proves himself brave, truthful, and unselfish, he may one day become a real boy. Returning home, Pinocchio finds Geppetto has gone to sea to look for him and has been swallowed by the giant sea monster, . Pinocchio dives into the ocean, finds his father inside the beast, and hatches a plan to escape. By starting a fire to make Monstro sneeze, they are propelled out of the monster’s belly.
