The story begins with the introduction of Peter Coene (Bob Storm), a wealthy and proud farmer who believes his status puts him above the local nobility. Conflict arises when his son Fons (Jacky Morel) takes an interest in the sexton’s daughter, a match Peter deems beneath their station. Meanwhile, the rascal Lewie, better known as " De Witte " (Fons Exelmans), begins his career of mischief by stealing at home to help the vagrant Wannes Raps (Gaston Vandermeulen).
