Maggie Peyton, a recent college graduate from a racing family, finds Herbie in a junkyard. Despite her father's wishes for her to take a safer sportscasting job, Herbie "chooses" her, leading them into an impromptu street race against champion Trip Murphy.

After Herbie wins the street race, Trip Murphy becomes obsessed with beating the little car. This eventually leads Maggie and Herbie to the NASCAR Nextel Cup, where they must overcome mechanical failures and Trip's aggressive driving to win.

The film used a mix of mechanical effects and digital enhancements to give Herbie his characteristic expressions, such as winking and blinking.
