The film follows John Smith (Alex Pettyfer), a teenage alien from the planet Lorien hiding on Earth. He is one of nine children with special "Legacies" (superpowers) being hunted by the Mogadorians—vicious invaders who can only kill them in a specific numerical order.

He settles in Paradise, Ohio, where he tries to live a normal life while being protected by his guardian, Henri (Timothy Olyphant).
